Things to do as a filmmaker during the coronavirus pandemic
As the coronavirus pandemic spreads throughout the world, most of us are finding that jobs are cancelled or postponed. Here are seven things you can do as an individual filmmaker while all your tools are down to prepare for when things get moving again
1. Clean and organize your gear
Take time to ‘spring clean’ all your camera equipment, so that when work returns to normal, you’ll be ready.
2. Clean and re-install your computer software and archive projects
You’re always working on a project, your computer has to get the job done, and you don’t have hours or days to fully re-install all your software/plugins. This is a fantastic opportunity to format your editing machine, clean your hard drives, archive projects, and make some space for the next job.
3. Work on a new showreel
Put together a new reel online for 2020. The good news is, you now have a couple of hours to cut a fantastic reel for the year to come, so take the opportunity while it’s there.
4. Keep learning things
Film-making is a very demanding job. At the end of 12-hour working days, reading a book, researching new techniques, or watching some video tutorials isn’t number one on your to-do- list. However, as a filmmaker, you should always keep learning new things and perfecting your craft.
5. Workout and family time
Getting your mind and body in a good place before falling back into the old routine is an excellent idea. Catching up with friends and family is a great way to brighten someone’s day. Call/Email/Skype, or even Zoom
6. Chill
Finally, take some time to chill and relax. Enjoy and stay safe.
